Overview
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) as part of the
Statistics Serving Society (S3) series, presents a new Ingram Olkin Forum that will focus on the critical issue of maternal mortality in the United States. Despite significant medical advancements, the U.S. continues to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates among developed nations. Of particular concern is the alarming statistic reported by the CDC: African American women are more than three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts.
This forum will explore the statistical challenges and opportunities in addressing these stark disparities. We will discuss emerging data sources, evidence-based interventions, and the role of statistical modeling in informing policies and healthcare practices that can reduce maternal mortality across all demographics.
With the 2024 U.S. presidential election on the horizon, reproductive rights and healthcare are crucial issues being debated. Policy decisions made in this election will undoubtedly affect maternal mortality rates moving forward, especially in communities of color. Regardless of the outcome of this presidential campaign, NISS will bring together leading experts in the field of medical statistical sciences to discuss the leading causes of maternal mortality rates and will effectively communicate the statistics from the data provided.
Join us as we bring together experts in statistics, healthcare, and policy to examine the data, explore solutions, and advocate for change in this pressing area of public health.

Ingram Olkin Forums (IOF) are a series of forums to honor the memory of Professor Ingram Olkin presented by the NISS IOF committee Statistics Serving Society (S3).
Each forum focuses on a current societal issue that might benefit from new or renewed attention from the statistical community. The S3 Forums aim to bring the latest innovations in statistical methodology and data science into new research and public policy collaborations, working to accelerate the development of innovative approaches that impact societal problems. As the Forum will be the first time a particular group of experts will be gathered together to consider an issue, new energy and synergy is expected to produce a flurry of new ideas and approaches.
