AI Day for Federal Statistics: A CNSTAT Public Event

Thursday, May 2, 2024 - 10 am - 5:30 pm ET

Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing at a rate that many might have thought impossible a few years earlier, particularly including the development of natural language processing. The Committee on National Statistics, the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology, and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences are working together to organize an AI Day to be conducted on May 2, 2024, in which the implications of AI for federal statistical agencies will be explored, including a look at what statistical research needs to be performed. As part of that exploration, we will also consider the intersection of federal statistics with how other fields make use of AI.

The goal of the event is to facilitate the appropriate use of AI within the federal government by:

  • Discussing potential uses of AI,
  • Highlighting issues involved when seeking to incorporate AI,
  • Discussing practical tools, and
  • Summarizing which AI tools provide the best return.

The sessions will particularly focus on applications concerning federal statistics, including data collection, data processing, data generation, quality control, statistical analysis, and accounting for uncertainty.

As part of AI Day, federal agencies are also being asked to submit poster sessions on methodological issues, organizational constraints, applications, or outcomes related to their use of AI, including case studies of how AI is being applies, what tools are used, what difficulties are encountered, protecting privacy in the context of AI, and the measurement of outcomes associated with AI.

Staff organizing this event: Michael Siri and Brad Chaney

Call for Posters

SUBMIT POSTER APPLICATIONS

Deadline for submissions: April 1, 2024

Are you using artificial intelligence (AI) as a federal statistical agency or to support federal statistical agencies, or to synthesize federal official statistics for other purposes? Would you like to share your findings with others through a poster session? AI is the science of making machines that can act like humans in terms of performing tasks such as recognizing patterns and making decisions. It may include machine learning and deep learning, and may involve natural language processing.

On May 2, 2024, CNSTAT will host AI Day for Federal Statistics at the National Academy of Sciences Building. AI Day is an opportunity for federal employees to share their experiences in and plans for incorporating AI as a tool for federal programs. The goal of the event is to facilitate the appropriate use of AI within the federal government by discussing potential uses, highlight issues involved when seeking to incorporate AI, discuss practical tools, and summarize which AI tools provide the best return. The sessions will particularly focus on applications concerning federal statistics, including data collection, data processing, data generation, quality control, statistical analysis, and accounting for uncertainty.

Posters may include methodological issues, organizational constraints, applications, or outcomes, such as:

  • Case studies of how AI is being applied within the federal government for statistics
  • Tools used to create AI applications for federal statistics
  • Difficulties encountered when seeking to incorporate AI for federal statistics
  • Protecting privacy in the context of AI for federal statistics
  • Measurement of outcomes associated with AI for federal statistics

Your application, with abstract, is due by April 1, 2024. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words. Applicants will be notified by April 8, 2024 if their poster has been selected. Posters should be at least 18 x 24 inches and no larger than 48 x 60 inches in size and brought to AI Day as physical hard copies. Please contact Madeleine Goedicke (mgoedicke@nas.edu) with questions or for additional information.

The Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) is organizing this event in collaboration with the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM), and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS).

About National Academies of Sciences CNSTAT

The Committee on National Statistics was established in 1972 at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based. The committee carries out studies, workshops, and other activities to foster better measures and fuller understanding of the economy, the environment, public health, crime, education, immigration, poverty, welfare, and other public policy issues. It also evaluates ongoing statistical programs and tracks the statistical policy and coordinating activities of the federal government, serving a unique role at the intersection of statistics and public policy. The committee’s work is supported by a consortium of federal agencies through a National Science Foundation grant, a National Agricultural Statistics Service cooperative agreement, and several individual contracts.
