Job Description

RTI International’s Center for Official Statistics (COS) is seeking a statistician with a master’s degree and statistical programming skills, or an experienced bachelor’s level statistician and statistical programmer, to work on projects in survey sampling, experimental design, and statistical research.  COS is part of RTI’s Analytics Practice Area, which is a collaborative, diverse group of researchers with skills in statistics, data science, informatics, and genomics. RTI statisticians conduct cutting-edge research in survey and sample design, weighting, imputation, modeling, and statistical analysis.  We take our mission “to improve the human condition” seriously and seek staff who resonate with it.

As a statistician you would work across a variety of fields, including health, education and justice statistics. This position requires the ability to work independently and as a member of a team to deliver high quality work. A successful candidate will enjoy statistical programming, problem-solving, and be highly detail oriented. This position involves learning about and participating in RTI’s business development and proposal process. Employees will grow their scientific stature through conference presentations and scientific publishing. Eighty to ninety percent of daily work is at a computer, the remainder of the position-time would be in project planning meetings and conference calls.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statistically sound consultation on data collection, survey design, and data analysis to meet project objectives.
  • Assist in the preparation, presentation, and follow-up of research proposals by providing computer programming support, literature reviews, and analysis.
  • Develop, document, and verify the correctness of original data processing or statistical programs in SAS or R to satisfy requests provided in varying levels of formality and detail.
  • Learn about RTI’s proposal process, write sections of technical proposals, and contribute to budgets.
  • Utilize standard statistical and/or data management software packages (e.g., SAS, R) to execute data processing and data analysis activities and to summarize and present findings.
  • Manage large datasets; move and merge data files from different platforms (e.g., SQL, Excel, SAS); clean, aggregate data and perform quality control; evaluate/analyze and interpret data.
  • Collaborate on the development and conduct of methodological research based on sound science, the analysis of the resulting research data, and on the creation of peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical presentations.
  • Communicate the results of analyses verbally or in writing and solicit clarification or further detail at appropriate points in the analytic process.
  • Balance the programming and analytic needs of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Conduct appropriate professional development and scientific stature efforts.
  • Mentor earlier career staff through project collaboration or formal arrangements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, or Mathematics with at least 1 year experience in the degree area; Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience programming in SAS or R, with the ability to learn SAS if current expertise is in R.
  • Demonstrated data manipulation, data editing, and data management skills.
  • Effective skills in communication and team collaboration.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office products like Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent writing skills as evidenced by a cover letter.
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with other statistical software is a plus (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS) and software such as Python, Linux/CRON.
  • Experience in survey statistics. sampling design, in manipulating large, or complex data systems.
  • Certification in SAS.
  • Co-author on a publication or presentation.
