Non-Clinical Statistics
We will use the opportunity of this webinar to introduce to the students the drug research and development process and how non-clinical statisticians are involved in each step. After the presentation, we hope the students will have a better understanding of different career paths in the pharmaceutical industry.
There will be a short introduction given by Tom Bradstreet, followed by a short presentation by Oluyemi Oyeniran which will be followed by Q&A involving all of the panelists.
What are these challenges that are unique to biostatisticians in non-clinical settings? What types of opportunities are available? How should one prepare to enter this field?
NISS has once again gathered an incredible set of speakers/panelists. Not only do they bring extensive experience working the field of biostatistics, but these individuals have as their priority a willingness to share their experiences so that others may better understand an be better prepared for working as a biostatistician in a non-clinical setting.

About the Participants
Oluyemi Oyeniran, Ph.D., Oluyemi Oyeniran is a principal Statistician at Johnson and Johnson with more than 4 years’ experience supporting cross-pharma non-clinical statistical support to manufacturing, biotechnology, regulatory groups, and pharmaceutical development across various therapeutic areas for both small and large molecules. Oluyemi received his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 2016
Tom Bradstreet is Director, Preclinical Biomarkers & Discovery Research at Bristol-Myers Squibb (7 years). He emphasizes design-to-decision making strategies while collaborating with and empowering preclincal scientists, primarily biologists, toxicologists, and imaging experts. Tom’s current statistical interests are Bayesian statistics and statistical education. Previously, Tom was employed at Merck (32 years) contributing to Animal Safety Assessment, Experimental Medicine, Clinical Pharmacolgy, Modeling and Simulation, and Phase III clinical trials. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology, Masters degrees in biostatistics and statistics, and his Ph.D. in statistics.
Jyh-Ming Shoung is a Director of Manufacturing and Applied Statistics at Janssen R&D, the Pharmaceutical Division of Johnson & Johnson. Jyh-Ming joined Johnson & Johnson in November 2004 supporting CM&C area including stability analysis, dissolution study, justification of specification, analytical method development, process validation, DoE, formulation study, manufacturing and control issues, etc. Previously Jyh-Ming was at IBM Storage Technology Division and Schering-Plough Research Institute as Research Statistician, after receiving his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 2001.
Wei Zhao is Director of Data Science at Fate Therapeutics. Dr. Zhao publishes statistical methods extensively in statistical genetics/genomics, virtual screening, process monitoring, drug combination methodology, etc. He also has working experience in phase I combination trial design, statistical methods in assay development, tech transfer, biomarker analysis, PKPD modeling etc. One of his paper A New Bliss Independence Model to Analyze Drug Combination Data received SLAS Discovery Readers’ Choice Award in 2017. Previously Dr Zhao worked as clinical and non-clinical statisticians at St Jude Childern’s Research Hospital, AstraZeneca, and GSK after receiving his Ph.D. from University of Florida in 2005.
Fanni Zhang is a Senior Statistician in the Oncology Statistical Innovation group at AstraZeneca. She joined AstraZeneca in 2020 after previously working in a biomedical consulting company. Her responsibilities include statistical methodology/tool development, clinical trial design and analysis, and Bayesian analysis. Fanni obtained her PhD in Statistics from the George Washington University in 2014.
