The theme of the 2019 Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM) hosted by the American Statistical Association is Statistics: Making an Impact! The conference will cover topics ranging from statistical applications to methodology and theory to the expanding boundaries of statistics, such as analytics and data science. The 2019 JSM Conference is being held at the Denver Convention Center from July 27 to August 1, 2019.

NISS / SAMSI RECEPTION - Monday 7/29, 6 - 9 pm
Hyatt Regency Denver, Capitol Ballroom 7
650 15th Street, Denver, Colorado
The annual NISS Reception is traditionally held at the JSM Conference each year. The Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research is presented. This award honors Jerry Sacks, who was the first Director of NISS and a distinguished statistician who made significant contributions to the Statistics bridge theory, methodology and collaborative science and engineering. In addition, NISS also presents the Distinguished Service Award to recognize individuals who have given extraordinary service to advance NISS and its mission and the NISS Distinguished Alumni Award to recognize NISS Postdocs who have had distinguished careers.
NISS AFFILIATES LUNCHEON - Sunday 7/28, 11:30 - 2 pm
Hyatt Regency Denver, Mineral Hall C
650 15th Street, Denver, Colorado
Each year at JSM, NISS Affiliates get together for a luncheon. Each Affiliate is welcome to send one or two representatives to the luncheon. Typically the department head and the liaison.
This year luncheon speakers will feature Lisa LaVange (Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Biostatistics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; 2018 President of the American Statistical Association) and Daniel Jeske (Professor, Department of Statistics University of California, Riverside; Editor-in-Chief, The American Statistician) to talk about the real world evidence and alternatives to traditional p-values. Mimi Kim (Division Head, Division of Biostatistics Albert Einstein College of Medicine) is the moderator.
Both of these topics have been of keen interest to statisticians lately. It will be exciting to hear from individuals who sit at the center of these topics! We are very excited about hearing more from our affiliate colleagues on this topic and the discussion that will follow. (more info...)
NISS WORKSHOP: Writing Workshop for Junior Researchers - Sunday July 28 & Tuesday July 30, 2019
Hyatt Regency Denver, Capitol Ballroom 2
650 15th Street, Denver, Colorado
Held in two sessions, a full-day on Sunday and half-day on Tuesday, the goal of the workshop is to provide instruction for writing journal articles and grant proposals. Participants will be required to provide a recent sample of their writing, which will be reviewed by a senior mentor. The sample could be a current draft of an article to be submitted for publication or an early version of a grant proposal. Senior mentors will be former journal editors and program officers, who will critique the submitted material and provide individual feedback. This is a valued session that has been hosted by NISS for many years as a means of supporting early researchers in statistics. (more info ...)
DON’T FORGET TO STOP BY THE NISS TABLE!
NISS will also have a table at JSM 2019.
