This year’s JSM meeting of the NISS/SAMSI Affiliates will take place from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday, July 30, 2011, in the Crown Conch room of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.
For several reasons, were are dispensing with the “reports on NISS and SAMSI” component of previous JSM affiliates meetings, in order to focus on three very important—and we hope highly participatory—discussions, each planned to last 40 minutes:
- The future structure, timing, purpose and location of affiliates meetings, led by me. It appears that the current model of an April meeting at an affiliate site with some kind of accompanying scientific program and a two-hour-long JSM meeting is not delivering as much value as it should to affiliates. Any and all alternatives are on the table.
- Student-centric affiliates’ activities, led by Nell Sedransk. Both NISS and SAMSI both wish to do more to serve students at university affiliates, as well as support activities such as internships that can also benefit government and industry affiliates. Once again, no idea is too silly or impractical.
- SAMSI Programs for 2012-13, led by Richard Smith. These programs are “Statistical and Computational Methodology for Massive Datasets” and “Data-Driven Decisions in Healthcare.” The purpose of the discussion is to give affiliates a special and unique opportunity to influence the directions of the programs, as well as identify those interested in participating.
The meeting will conclude with a networking reception from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, at which I envision the three discussions continuing. Susan Ellenberg, who became chair of the NISS Board of Trustees on July 1, will attend, and is eager to talk with you.
I very much hope that you will be able to attend the meeting. If not, please see if you can find a colleague to attend in your place. We particularly welcome your more junior colleagues, with whom NISS and SAMSI would like to have deeper relationships.
