NISS and the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) are co-hosted a two-day workshop on research issues lying at the interface of the mathematical and statistical sciences and the geosciences. Many of these issues would relate strongly to themes of the NSF program on Collaboration in Mathematical Geosciences (CMG)
*
Mathematical and statistical modeling of large, complex geosystems
*
Representing uncertainty in geosystems
*
Analyzing large geoscience data sets.
The workshop will emphasize:
*
Collaboration and interfaces, using a format of paired presentations, one by a geoscientist, in the role of "problem owner," and one by a mathematical or statistical scientist, responding with his or her identification of central issues from the mathematical and statistical perspective.
*
Extending CMG into areas of the mathematical and geophysical sciences that are not currently reached, such as fuzzy logic, topology, geochemistry, biological oceanography, and mineral physics.
*
Active participation by as many attendees as possible, through a poster session, "Two-Minute Madness," breakout sessions and opportunities for informal interactions.
*
New researchers, to whom support will be preferentially directed and who will have dedicated opportunities to participate.
The anticipated outcomes of the workshop include sharper identification of research issues and approaches at the interface of the mathematical and statistical sciences and the geosciences and new collaborations to address the issues.
The workshop will be held at the Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park in Research Triangle Park, NC. Support will be available for travel expenses.
Organizing Committee
Kayo Ide (UCLA), Alan Karr, Cecile Penland (NOAA), Jan Sojka (Utah State University), Robert van der Hilst (MIT), and others to be named.
