April 28, Research Triangle Park, NC - Xia Wang from the University of Connecticut will begin work as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) beginning in June. NISS is a research institution created by the statistics professional societies to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross- disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences.
Wang will focus on the Clinical Proteomic Technology Assessment for Cancer (CPTC), a program run by the National Cancer Institute along with five major research centers across the United States. The CPTAC program is a five-year, $104 million initiative to build the foundation of technologies, data, reagents and reference materials, analysis systems, and infrastructure needed to systematically advance protein biology for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. NISS' role is to provide statistical expertise and guidance on the project and to develop specific statistical methodology for proteomics research. NISS is also working with the five centers to analyze their combined data from their multi-center studies in order to
maximize the information to be gained from these large research efforts in proteomics.
Wang will receive her Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Connecticut this May. Her dissertation is "Generalized Link Functions for Binary Response Data." She received a Ph.D. in Economics in 2007 from the University of Connecticut. In 2001, Wang earned her Master of Arts degree from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, located in China. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in economics. The university is also located in China.
About NISS
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences was established in 1990 by the national statistics societies and the Research Triangle universities and organizations, with the mission to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences. NISS is dedicated to strengthening and serving the national statistics community, most notably by catalyzing community members' participation in applied research driven by challenges facing government and industry. NISS also provides career development opportunities for statisticians and scientists, especially those in the formative stages of their careers. NISS is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
