The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), a non-profit institution that conducts statistical science research, announced that Gabriel Huerta and Ray Bain have been selected to serve on the organization's Board of Trustees. The new Board members will begin their terms July 1, 2015 and will serve for a three-year term.
Dr. Gabriel Huerta is Professor of Statistics and Graduate Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of New Mexico. He has been with UNM since 2002. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1998. Gabriel's areas of research include Bayesian time series, space-time modeling, parameter estimation in climate modeling and extreme value analysis. He is an associate editor for Bayesian Analysis and The American Statistician. He also served as the Treasurer for the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA) from 2008-2010 and is currently serving as Secretary of ISBA’s Environmental Sciences Section. He was a visiting fellow at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute in 2009.
Dr. Ray Bain is Vice President and Head of the Biostatistics and Research Decision Sciences (BARDS) Global Clinical Development for Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). Prior to joining Merck, Ray was a member of The Biostatistics Center at George Washington University (1986 – 1999) where he was Co-Director of the Center and Research Professor of Statistics. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Statistics and Biometry, Emory University School of Medicine in 1981. From 1981 to 1986 he was an Assistant Professor of Biometry, Medicine and Community Health at Emory University and a member of the Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics, a site of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program of the National Cancer Institute - NIH.
Bain has served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Clinical Trials (2003-07) and was named Fellow of the Society in 2013. He has served on Advisory Boards for the Department of Statistics of George Mason University (2006-12) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development-NIH sponsored clinical trial research network (2006-14).

About NISS
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences was established in 1990 by the national statistics societies and the Research Triangle universities and organizations, with the mission to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences. NISS is dedicated to strengthening and serving the national statistics community, most notably by catalyzing community members’ participation in applied research driven by challenges facing government and industry. NISS also provides career development opportunities for statisticians and scientists, especially those in the formative stages of their careers. In particular, NISS has appointed more that 70 postdoctoral fellows with graduate training in statistics, computer science, mathematics, environmental sciences, psychometrics and transportation. NISS headquarters are located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; NISS also has offices in Washington, DC.
