
April 30, 2024 – The COPSS-NISS Leadership Webinar series continued with an insightful session on Leadership in Translational Statistical Research, held on Tuesday, April 30, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM ET. This webinar brought together leading experts to discuss how statistical research can drive real-world advancements in public health and medicine, emphasizing the importance of leadership in ensuring translational impact. The event attracted attendees across various career stages eager to gain insights into the impact of statistical research beyond academia.
This webinar focused on how statistical research, when effectively conducted and communicated, can drive meaningful advancements in medical and public health domains. The speakers shared strategies for ensuring that statistical work has a tangible translational impact, emphasizing collaboration with practitioners, policymakers, and interdisciplinary teams.
Moderated by Jeff Goldsmith, Associate Professor of Biostatistics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, the discussion featured two distinguished speakers:
- Sherri Rose, Ph.D., Professor of Health Policy and Co-Director of the Health Policy Data Science Lab at Stanford University, whose research focuses on applying statistical machine learning approaches to enhance human health and health equity. Her work spans risk adjustment, ethical algorithms in health care, comparative effectiveness, and health program evaluation. Among her many honors are the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, and the Mortimer Spiegelman Award.
- Taki Shinohara, Ph.D., Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Penn Statistical Imaging and Visualization Endeavor (PennSIVE). His research focuses on applying translational statistical and machine learning methods to improve brain health through the analysis of multimodal medical images.
The discussion highlighted strategies for statisticians and data scientists to ensure that their work leads to practical advancements in health care and policy. The speakers emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical considerations in statistical modeling, and the importance of leadership in translating research into actionable solutions.
