Job Description
RTI International’s Center for Official Statistics (COS) seeks an early career statistician with SAS or R skills to work on projects across a variety of domains, such as public health, health care, education, and social science, as well as survey statistics and statistical research. COS statisticians lead and support projects, which are often surveys for federal clients, and they conduct cutting-edge research in survey and sample design, weighting, imputation, modeling, and statistical analysis. COS is in RTI’s Analytics Practice Area, which comprises a collaborative, diverse group of researchers with backgrounds including statistics, data science, informatics, and genomics. This position requires the ability to work independently and as a member of a team to deliver high quality work. A successful candidate will enjoy statistical programming, problem-solving, and be highly detail oriented. This position involves learning about RTI’s business development and proposal process. Employees will have opportunities to grow their scientific stature through conference presentations and scientific publishing. Eighty to ninety percent of daily work is at a computer, and the remainder of the position-time would be in project planning meetings and conference calls.
Responsibilities
Utilize standard statistical and/or data management software packages (e.g., SAS, R) to execute data processing and data analysis activities and to summarize and present findings.
- Provide statistically sound consultation to meet project objectives.
- Balance the programming and analytic needs of multiple projects simultaneously.
- Manage large datasets; move and merge data files from different platforms (e.g., SQL, Excel, SAS); clean, aggregate data and perform quality control; evaluate/analyze and interpret data.
- Communicate the results of analyses verbally or in writing at appropriate points in the analytic process.
- Learn about the proposal process and contribute to proposals, with oversight.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, or Mathematics.
- At least 3 months of non-academic experience working with either SAS or R.
- Demonstrated data manipulation and data management skills.
- Effective skills in communication and team collaboration.
- Working familiarity with Microsoft Office applications like Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent writing skills as evidenced by a cover letter.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with other statistical software (e.g., Stata, SPSS) and other software, such as Python and Linux/CRON, is a plus.
- Coursework in survey statistics.
- Certification in SAS.
