The George Mason University Department of Statistics in the School of Computing (SoC), part of the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), invites applications for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions beginning in fall 2025. The Department of Statistics offers a PhD in Statistical Science, two MS degrees (Biostatistics and Statistical Science with concentrations in Modern Statistics and Statistical Data Science), a BS in Statistics with four concentrations, and dual MS and accelerated BS/MS options. Though a relatively young department founded in 1992, the Department has demonstrated rapid growth in research and scholarship. It is renowned for its leaders in statistics, biostatistics, data science, and AI, with national/international credentials and prestigious honors.

Located on the beautiful Fairfax, VA campus in Northern Virginia's high-tech corridor, the department is just 30 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C., and Dulles International Airport, with top-ranked high schools in the country. Its main offices in the Engineering Building foster a connected community with other CEC departments and are a short walk to Research Hall's mathematics and other science departments. With additional space in the new Fuse building on the Arlington campus, accessible via shuttles, metros, and railways, the department has access to state-of-the-art facilities in Fairfax and Arlington and vast resources from industrial, cultural, government, and academic institutions in the capital area. About the Position:

Both tenure-track and tenured positions are 9 month Instructional Faculty positions, aka, hard-money positions that are funded by the university educational and general funds. Tenure-track faculty is eligible for a provost one-semester study leave after a successful three-year review. Full-time, tenured faculty with six or more years of completed service at George Mason University can also apply for study leaves.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts independent and collaborative research;
  • Teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Develops an independent, externally funded research program;
  • Advises students; and
  • Participates in all aspects of the department mission, including university, college, and departmental governance, professional and public service.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have received a PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field by the position's start date;
  • Junior faculty candidates must have demonstrated potential for excellence and productivity in statistical or statistical data science research, and a commitment to high-quality teaching; and
  • Senior candidates for tenured positions must have established records of outstanding research and excellent teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applicants in all areas of Statistics will be given full consideration. We are particularly interested in candidates with research experience in modern statistics, statistical data science/analytics, biostatistics, explainable AI, machine learning, modern causal inference, modern computing, data/population shifts, privacy and security, networks, and large or unstructured data; and
  • Candidates who can build collaborations with other departments within the College, across the university, or national organizations will benefit from the strong support and encouragement for interdisciplinary collaboration from the College and the University.
