Sallie Ann Keller Receives the 2010 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research

James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees of  the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), announces that Dr. Sallie Ann Keller has received the 2010 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research. Katherine Ensor, chair of the Department of Statistics at Rice University, accepted the award on Keller's behalf at the NISS reception at the Joint Statistical Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia on August 2.

2010 NISS Distinguished Service Award Presented to Bock, Wilkinson and Thomas

James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) announces that Mary Ellen Bock, Lee Wilkinson and James Thomas are the recipients of this year's NISS Distinguished Service Awards. The awards were presented by Alan Karr, director of NISS, at the NISS/SAMSI reception held on August 2 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, British Columbia.

NISS Hires Lawrence H. Cox as Assistant Director for Official Statistics

Lawrence H. Cox, Ph.D. has been appointed Assistant Director for Official Statistics at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS).  The announcement was made by Alan Karr, Director of NISS, who noted that “Larry Cox is a distinguished statistician who will help NISS in many ways, especially on research conducted in partnership with the federal statistical agencies. Larry’s joining us is an important step in the evolution of NISS.

National Institute of Statistical Sciences Awarded Grant for Postdoctoral Research in Support of Science Resource Statistics (SRS)

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), an independent institute that conducts cross-disciplinary and cross-sector statistical sciences research, has been awarded a $750,209 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a postdoctoral research program in collaboration with NSF’s Division of Science Resource Statistics (SRS). The two-year program will begin this June.

NISS and SAMSI Win NCPRSA 2010 InSpire Award in Social Media Category

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) has been awarded the North Carolina Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA) InSpire Bronze Best of Category Award for the Social Media category. The award was presented on Wednesday, May 5 at the Brier Creek Country Club. Bill Leslie, anchor for WRAL News, was the emcee.

Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality Publishes Papers Presented at NISS Workshop: Data Confidentiality - the Next Five Years

The electronic Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality (JPC) has just released its second issue. This issue was assembled by three guest editors:  Satkartar K. Kinney, Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), Joe Fred Gonzalez, Jr., mathematical statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Alan F. Karr, Director of NISS.

Hailin Sang Appointed Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences

Hailin Sang has been appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). NISS is a research institute created by the statistical professional societies with support from a consortium of North Carolina universities.

David Yang Joins NISS as Research Associate to Work on Projects for NCES

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) is happy to announce that David Yang has joined its staff as the Research Associate to work with the Education Statistics Services Institute (ESSI). ESSI provides technical expertise to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in the areas of statistical methodology research, statistical analysis, survey development and project management. NISS is a partner with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and RTI International in operating ESSI.

NISS to Work on Syndromic Surveillance Project for NSF and DTRA

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) have awarded $664,019 to the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) for collaborative research to develop Bayesian methods for syndromic surveillance. The research focuses on use of conditionally auto regressive (CAR) models to provide quantified estimates of the probability that a disease is present in a particular location, on characterization of associated uncertainties, and on computational implementation at a nationwide scale.
